Acting Superintendent Mark Gengaro announced Lucas' death in a letter to families.
Lucas, who helmed School Two, began working in the district as a music teacher at School 12 in 1995, where she continued to work as assistant principal. She later moved on to become principal of School Two, "where she made a lasting impact on all who knew her as a friend, colleague, and school leader," Gengaro said.
"Her ability to inspire and motivate extended across Clifton as she brought our community together each year, leading the Safety Patrol trip to Washington. Her kind and caring spirit has touched countless lives."
Mahmoud Ijbara, HSA treasurer at School Two, said Lucas was "like a second parent to us all, and made everyone feel "valued in their contributions.
"Her warmth, kindness, and dedication to the school and our community will never be forgotten. Ms. Lucas touched countless lives, knew each child by name, and treated every parent with the utmost respect and care.
"Let’s all take a moment to reflect on the incredible impact she made in our lives and send love and strength to her family. She will be deeply missed, but her legacy will live on in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her."
Dozens of community members commented on Ijbara's post, shared to a Clifton Facebook group.
"Heartbreaking news," one person said." She was a special light in this world, always so kind and loving. Our family is deeply saddened by her death. We have many fond memories of her and I pray her family is comforted in knowing that her school community always felt like she was a part of our family too."
"Our kids loved Ms. Lucas since she was their vocal music teacher at school 9 many years ago," another said. "Working in the Board of Ed. Business Office, I would speak to her often. She always asked about my kids. She was really a gem. Huge loss to us."
Counseling is being made available to students.
